There may be no greater aspiration than changing the world in a positive way. So why do so many of us believe in great causes, but fall short of taking them on? For one thing, we may be scared off by the enormity of the big issues or believe that the people who make big things happen are fundamentally different from us: natural born speakers with special charismatic powers of persuasion. In fact, Sam Daley-Harris believes organizations can cultivate transformational advocacy skills, so that all their supporters can be effective at persuading lawmakers, generating media buzz, and organizing for maximum impact.
U of M alum Sam Daley-Harris’ book, Reclaiming Our Democracy, provides a powerful way to make a difference and heal our democracy in the process. It's not the only solution needed, but is one essential, missing piece: citizens awakening to their power.
Sam Daley-Harris founded the anti-poverty lobby RESULTS in 1980, co-founded the Microcredit Summit Campaign in 1995, and founded Civic Courage in 2012. The 2024 edition of Daley-Harris’ book Reclaiming Our Democracy: Every Citizen’s Guide to Transformational Advocacy was named an editor’s pick by Publisher’s Weekly BookLife. Ashoka founder Bill Drayton said, “Sam Daley-Harris is one of the certified great social entrepreneurs of the last decades.”
Sponsored by the Office of Civic and Community Engagement, the Butler Center for Service and Leadership, the George P. Hanley Democracy Center, and the Abess Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy.
