About this Event
1314 Miller Dr, Coral Gables, FL 33146
Gerard Schwarz, conductor
Sophie Mok, graduate conductor
First commissioned in 1965 by Dr. Fabien Sevitzky, who was the conductor of the University of Miami Symphony Orchestra at the time, William Grant Still's Threnody: In Memory of Jean Sibelius pays homage to the Finnish composer. This piece received its world premiere here at the University of Miami on the centennial of Sibelius's birth.
English composer Benjamin Britten’s Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Henry Purcell is often known as “the Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra” because it features and highlights instruments and sections of the orchestra.
Sibelius’ Violin Concerto in D minor is the only concerto he wrote. The 2022 FSO Violin Concerto Competition winner joins graduate conductor Sophie Mok in this brilliant concerto. The concert concludes with Maestro Gerard Schwarz conducting Sibelius’s second symphony, which the composer regarded as “a confession of the soul.”
