In the Ethical Meanders of Design by Philippe d'Anjou
Design, viewed through the interplay of Idealist/Materialist Ideology andEgocentric/Altruistic Teleology, unveils some ethical complexity. A heuristic modelproposes four paradigms, forming a philosophical compass for designers to identifytheir stance and consciously re-shape a praxis in harmony with design's intrinsicethics and impactful existence in the world.
Bio: Philippe d'Anjou
Philippe is Professor at the School of Architecture at Florida Atlantic University. Heteaches architecture and design history, theory, and ethics. Professor d’Anjou’sresearch explores the intricate relationships between design and ethics from aphilosophical perspective. His scholarship has been published in academic journalsand collections, and presented at conferences and universities worldwide; it hasbeen translated and published in Chinese, Spanish, and French. He is the author ofDesign Ethics Beyond Duty and Virtue (2017), Ethical Design Intelligence: TheVirtuous Designer (2020), and The Adaptive Nature of Design Ethics Discourse(forthcoming 2024). A new book on the issue concerning the question of humanismin design is under development.
