About this Event
5030 Brunson Dr, Coral Gables, FL 33146
In honor of the late director William Friedkin, you are invited to a free screening of his seminal 1985 thriller "To Live and Die in LA," starring William Petersen as a Secret Service agent on the hunt for the counterfeiter (Willem Dafoe) who killed his former partner.
Friedkin's vital, visceral and shocking police drama -- arguably the last great movie he directed -- builds on the flashy style of "Miami Vice" and MTV music videos of the area to create a singular mood of merciless, sun-kissed urban rot.
Featuring one of the wildest car chases ever put on film (Friedkin's attempt to top his own "The French Connection") and a dynamic score by Wang Chung, "To Live in Die in L.A." remains as powerful and thrilling today as it was nearly 40 years ago.
Admission is free but registration required above.
"To Live and Die in L.A. was well-received by critics, but it didn’t score financially and may have further damaged Friedkin’s reputation. Today, it’s rightfully acknowledged as a near-masterpiece.
"The fashions and music and attitudes on display might have been interpreted at the time as opportunistic stabs at au courant stylization, but the film is nevertheless overpowering and otherworldly rather than quaint or kitschy. It feels like a transmission from a different planet. To Live and Die in L.A. is so of its time that you can only be captivated by it." -- Bilge Ebiri, Village Voice
