The translational health in nutrition and kinesiology (THINK) program is a
multidimensional curriculum designed to enhance health-related physical fit
ness and physical literacy against a backdrop of STEM education. Health-rel
ated physical fitness encompasses body composition and fat distribution alo
ng with physical fitness variables including aerobic fitness\, muscular str
ength/power\, muscular endurance\, and flexibility all of which reduce the
risk of chronic disease. Physical literacy encompasses the confidence\, com
petence\, motivation\, and knowledge/understanding of exercise science and
its benefits in promoting an active\, healthy lifestyle.\n\nThe THINK progr
am always begins with the introduction of a health-related theme relevant t
o nutrition or exercise science education. This is followed by hands-on cli
nical experiences using different pieces of equipment such as goniometers t
o measure range of motion\, ECG’s to measure heart rate and rhythms during
exercise\, or bio-impedance and skin calipers to measure body composition.
This allows participants to be proactive in learning more about their own b
odies and how it functions in response to exercise. Structured physical act
ivities that reinforce educational and clinical experiences round out the p
rogram. These activities are designed to promote creative thinking (brain g
ames)\, team play\, self-expression\, and fun.\n\nAt the elementary and mid
dle school level\, the THINK program focuses on the translation of nutritio
n and exercise physiology concepts into positive lifestyle behaviors agains
t a backdrop of STEM learning. At the high school and college level\, the p
rogram focuses on STEM education and the professional preparation of studen
ts for college life and careers in the applied sciences. At all levels\, we
hope to extend student knowledge in nutrition and the exercise sciences by
laying the foundation of a good STEM education\, empowering our youth to l
ead active healthy lifestyles\, and motivating students to consider pursuin
 g STEM-related careers.
