DESCRIPTION:***CONDITION: If your child will be out more than 1 week throug
hout the camp period\, then your child may not participate this year***\n\
nThe translational health in nutrition and kinesiology (THINK) program is
a multidimensional curriculum designed to enhance health-related physical
fitness and physical literacy against a backdrop of STEM education. Health
-related physical fitness encompasses body composition and fat distributio
n along with physical fitness variables including aerobic fitness\, muscul
ar strength/power\, muscular endurance\, and flexibility all of which redu
ce the risk of chronic disease. Physical literacy encompasses the confiden
 ce\, competence\, motivation\, and knowledge/understanding of exercise sci
ence and its benefits in promoting an active\, healthy lifestyle.\n\nThe T
HINK program always begins with the introduction of a health-related theme
relevant to nutrition or exercise science education. This is followed by
hands-on clinical experiences using different pieces of equipment such as
goniometers to measure range of motion\, ECG’s to measure heart rate and
rhythms during exercise\, or bio-impedance and skin calipers to measure b
ody composition. This allows participants to be proactive in learning more
about their own bodies and how it functions in response to exercise. Stru
ctured physical activities that reinforce educational and clinical experie
nces round out the program. These activities are designed to promote creat
 ive thinking (brain games)\, team play\, self-expression\, and fun.\n\nAt
the elementary and middle school level\, the THINK program focuses on the
translation of nutrition and exercise physiology concepts into positive li
festyle behaviors against a backdrop of STEM learning. At the high school
and college level\, the program focuses on STEM education and the professi
onal preparation of students for college life and careers in the applied s
ciences. At all levels\, we hope to extend student knowledge in nutrition
and the exercise sciences by laying the foundation of a good STEM educatio
n\, empowering our youth to lead active healthy lifestyles\, and motivatin
g students to consider pursuing STEM-related careers.
