For 250 years, we have been a democratic work-in-progress, where it takes real work to build the world we want to live in together. Elections are the infrastructure for how we do us. But when the experience is beset by gerrymandering and attacks on voting rights, even people not used to paying attention are starting to notice that the infrastructure is fraying. Shoring up those basics means linking the battles in the headlines to the longer-term social determinants of democracy.
This inaugural talk in the annual Miami Election Law Forum, featuring Professor Justin Levitt from LMU Loyola Law School, helps situate the current democratic moment and its battles over electoral infrastructure – in Florida and beyond -- in the work of the past, with a firm eye on building the way forward.

About the speaker
Professor Justin Levitt, at LMU Loyola Law School, is a national expert on the law of democracy. He served as the White House’s inaugural Senior Policy Advisor for Democracy and Voting Rights, and he previously helped lead the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division on voting rights and employment discrimination. He has published widely and testified before federal and state legislative and administrative bodies and courts; before academia, he served on several presidential campaigns and at several civil rights nonprofits. Levitt has advised and represented citizens and officials of both major political parties and neither, and those whose partisan preference he does not know.
