There are countless digital online resources available, that, when paired with primary source materials in the humanities, such as classic texts, maps, art, philosophy, music, and many others, can open the door to the potential for the creation of new knowledge and discovery. New tools and standards have been developed to convert digitized artifacts into machine-readable data.
It is at this crossroads—where computing meets the humanities—that we arrive at digital humanities. Inquiries that were once believed to be too vast in scope can now be harnessed and thoroughly explored, such as:
- How did the early settlers organize themselves on their journeys?
- What factors influenced the development and growth of the automobile industry?
- Can one analyze and interpret 100,000 newspaper articles, all at once?
Not only can conclusions to such inquiries be obtained, but there is also a wide range of digital tools, methodologies, and sources available at your fingertips. This course will focus on introducing technologies that can be used in digital humanities endeavors, including introductions to structured databases, programming, and visualizations. We will discuss numerous ways artificial intelligence (AI) and digital humanities can intersect, enhancing the scope, depth, and efficiency of research and analysis in the humanities. AI can be used in natural language processing, data visualization, research, and discovery, which will assist you in investigating the answers to your complex questions and showcasing your findings.
Technology for Digital Humanities is a semester-long online course at the University of Miami that will introduce you to the different areas of digital humanities research and the resources specific to the field. This course will help you bring your studies or interests to life using digital tools, whether you are a student or researcher, librarian or archivist, museum curator or public historian—or someone who is simply curious.
Technology for Digital Humanities will provide you with a combination of engaging reading material, participation in helpful online discussions, and the skills to apply tools of the trade to solve practical and useful assignments. From the organization of your findings and research, to the visualization and analysis of your data, learn to leverage the power of today’s innovative tools to explore the questions you want answered.
