Gerard Schwarz, conductor
The Frost Symphony Orchestra will showcase the winners of the FSO Violin and Cello Concerto Competition in two romantic concertos. The German Romantic composer Richard Strauss wrote ten tone poems, and these works are often seen as the high point of the tone poem genre. Till Eulenspiegel’s “Merry Pranks” was the fifth one written in 1895, and it is based on the German folk hero of the same name. Sergei Rachmaninov wrote his last major composition, the Symphonic Dances, in the United States. Premiered by Eugen Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1941, this piece had programmatic origins and many underlying allusions to Rachmaninov’s own life.
