"Scales of the City"
I am fascinated, and motivated, by the forms and also the "idea" of the city, the place of lively complexities, and especially a place of connections. There are also long histories in cities that are less positive, and that point is even more apparent in our contemporary moment when we are battling increased polarization, siloization of communities, and disconnections socially. What role, what tools, and what capacities does architecture have in the city to address these challenges?
For me, the primary laboratory to explore this question has been Los Angeles... hardly a city in many people’s minds... but a place which forces one to confront issues of the contemporary city... like the possibility of many different scales existing within its vastness...
