##TheUCreatesPlease join us for Behind the Curtain: the Glass Art of Mary Shaffer, the Fall 2023 Myrna and Sheldon Palley Glass Artist Lecture featuring Mary Shaffer, followed by a reception with Shaffer's book by Schiffer Publishing available for sale.
A pioneering figure in the American Studio Glass Movement since the 1970s, Mary Shaffer invented a technique she calls “mid-air” slumping, using gravity and heat to create flowing, organic shapes from plate glass. Her sculptures sometimes combine glass with found objects to produce conceptually aesthetic works. Shaffer began her career as a painter, studying at the Rhode Island School of Design. She maintains her presence in both the conceptual art world and the glass art world, bridging the gap between the two.
Mary’s lecture will highlight different sculptural series and stories from her 50+ year art career.
Mary Shaffer’s work is featured in collections worldwide including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City; the Lowe Art Museum in Miami; the Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto, Japan; and museums in France, Switzerland, Germany, Canada, Bolivia, and Denmark. Shaffer has lectured worldwide and taught at Wellesley, New York University, California College of the Arts among others. Her honors include a USA Fellow Grant by United States Artists, three National Endowment for the Arts awards, Glaspreis from the Kassel Competition in Germany, and the Visionary Award from the Museum of Arts and Design.
