DESCRIPTION:You got the job! Now what? Law school teaches you how to think
like a lawyer\, write like a lawyer\, and research\, and some skills cours
es might even teach you oral advocacy\, but what most students do not lear
n in law school is how to be an associate. The reality\, especially in Big
law\, is that you are probably not going to argue before a judge/arbitrato
r for a long time\, and while you will certainly research and write\, unde
rstanding how to earn the trust of your colleagues is crucial to getting o
pportunities long term. While the culture of the law firm\, the culture of
the practice group\, the style of the seniors\, and the style of the head
of the practice group can make certain practical and soft skills more or
less valuable than others\, there are basic best practices that can help a
ll young associates shine. After this lecture\, students will have a bette
r understanding of the practical and soft skills needed to be a high-perfo
rming associate and receive insight into the day-to-day life of a dispute
resolution associate in a big law firm.
