A concert of 18th-, 19th-, and 20th-century orchestral masterworks by Barber, Bartok, Mozart, Strauss, and Stravinsky.Richard Strauss’s tone poem Don Juanvividly depicts the legendary fictional character throughout his mischievous acts. Bela Bartok’s Dance Suitewas written in 1923 to celebrate the union of the cities of Buda and Pest, which formed the current day Hungarian capital of Budapest.
When The Firebird was written in 1910, Igor Stravinsky was virtually an unknown composer, but his collaborations with Sergei Diaghilev and Ballet Russes led to some of the most iconic 20th-century works.
American composer Samuel Barber first wrote the ballet Medea in 1946. A year later, he extrapolated musical elements from the ballet into an orchestral seven-movement suite, which he titled Medea's Dance of Vengeance in honor of the Greek myth of Medea.
Mozart's Piano Concerto no. 25, K. 503 is not often played as compared to the other 27 numbered concerti. The first movement from the C major concerto will be played and conducted from the keyboard by Frost graduate Yun Cao.
