DESCRIPTION:In the mid-fourteenth century\, a complex set of circumstances
made it possible for a woman\, Queen Johanna I\, to assume the throne of N
aples as the sole ruler. Naples was one of the most powerful kingdoms in E
urope and Johanna’s position as sovereign of the city and its extensive
territories was therefore hotly contested.\n\n \n\nJoin us for an evening
of royal intrigue as Assistant Curator Dr. John Witty\, a specialist in fo
urteenth-century Italian art\, elucidates how two donor portraits in an al
tarpiece in the Lowe Art Museum’s Kress collection can be identified as
claimants to Johanna’s throne. A performance of period music by vocal en
semble Ampersand will complete our time travel to this fascinating histori
 cal context.
