About this Event
1301 Stanford Dr, Coral Gables, FL 33146
In the mid-fourteenth century, a complex set of circumstances made it possible for a woman, Queen Johanna I, to assume the throne of Naples as the sole ruler. Naples was one of the most powerful kingdoms in Europe and Johanna’s position as sovereign of the city and its extensive territories was therefore hotly contested.
Join us for an evening of royal intrigue as Assistant Curator Dr. John Witty, a specialist in fourteenth-century Italian art, elucidates how two donor portraits in an altarpiece in the Lowe Art Museum’s Kress collection can be identified as claimants to Johanna’s throne. A performance of period music by vocal ensemble Ampersand will complete our time travel to this fascinating historical context.
