DESCRIPTION:Join us for an online presentation and discussion with Victor D
eupi as he highlights his new book “Rada Photography: Mid-Century Archit
ecture and Culture in South Florida and the Caribbean\,” which focuses o
n photographers Anette and Rudi Rada's work in Cuba and Puerto Rico.\n\n \
n\nIn this first critical biography of the life and work of the Radas\, tw
o photographers working in South Florida and the Caribbean from approximat
ely 1946 to 1975\, architectural historian Deupi explores the lasting sign
ificance of the Radas in documenting the cities\, buildings\, landscapes\,
and people of the region during major social and economic transformations
of the 20th century.\n\n \n\nDuring the South Florida building boom of th
e 1950s\, the Radas were highly sought-after photographers. Magazines\, ne
wspapers\, and travel firms hired them to help advertise new houses and ho
tels\, promoting the tropics and subtropics as a still-untouched paradise.
In the Caribbean\, Rudi Rada photographed new buildings intruding artisti
cally and commercially into the natural environment while Annette Rada ado
pted a more ethnographic approach\, photographing local people amid burgeo
ning mass tourism. Whether in South Florida\, Cuba\, or elsewhere in their
travels\, the work of the Radas captured postwar architectural evolution\
, as well as challenges faced by populations adapting to modernization.\n\
 n \n\nFeaturing a wealth of never-before-published photographs and materia
l from several archives and collections\, “Rada Photography” adds port
rayals of the largely overlooked mid-century architecture of South Florida
and the Caribbean to existing architectural photography in the United Sta
tes and Latin America. The artistic output of Annette and Rudi Rada docume
nts how architects and architecture in the region gave shape to architectu
ral styles now known as Miami Modernism or Tropical Modern.\n\n \n\nFollow
ing the presentation\, there will be a Q&A with the audience.
