We are deeply saddened to inform the College of Engineering community that Ph.D. student David Barnhard passed away on Monday, Dec. 2, 2024.
David was an exceptional Ph.D. student and a valued friend to many. Originally from Maryland, he had resided in Miami for about seven years. David served in the U.S. Marine Corps for six years before joining the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) as an undergraduate student in 2018. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in spring 2022 with a perfect 4.0 GPA, earning the Best Mechanical Engineering Graduate Award.
David joined Dr. Qingda Yang's research group as a Ph.D. student in fall 2022 and made significant progress toward his dissertation. Most recently, he attended and presented at the 2024 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE2024), where he shared his research with the professional community. David received an award at the 2023 College of Engineering (CoE) Research Day. He also served as the MAE representative to the CoE Graduate Student Council during the 2022–2023 academic year. Earlier this semester, he presented his research in the MAE Department Seminar Series and was on track to graduate with his Ph.D. in spring 2026.
David was remarkably hardworking, resourceful, and always willing to help others. He took great pride in his work and deeply valued the outcomes achieved through dedication and effort. He was exceptionally responsible and consistently delivered excellence in all his endeavors, including his research, teaching assistant assignments, and role as a CoE Graduate Student Council member.
Our hearts go out to David’s family and friends during this difficult time.
