“Building a Translational Research Program: Where I come from and where we are going”
Since my early days as a clinician scientist here at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, I have always believed that the way to change our patients’ world is to use basic science concepts to develop new therapies. In my talk, I will present how my basic and clinical research projects have brought me closer to this goal. My background encompasses ocular immunology, corneal and bone marrow transplantation and keratoprosthesis. Throughout my career, I have translated basic science concepts in these fields into new therapies by collaboration -- working with other disciplines within ophthalmology and beyond. Mentoring the next generation of basic scientists and clinician scientists in the field of vision science research is important to me, together with building programs of distinction by developing needed research and clinical infrastructure, as well as leveraging contacts with industry to generate resources and pursue new entrepreneurial opportunities. In this talk, I want to share my experiences and knowledge to highlight where I come from and my vision for the future. In the pursuit for precision medicine for our patients, I see the need for the creation of a top-notch translational research program, a goal that cannot be accomplished in isolation but as part of an ambitious, multidisciplinary and interactive team.
