“Delivering remote eye care using a stereoscopic robotized
teleophthalmic drone slit lamp”
According to the WHO-2019 report, about 2.2 billion people are visually impaired worldwide, and 80% of this is preventable by timely detection and intervention. About 90% of the world's visually impaired people live in developing countries. While 70% of our population lives in rural India, 90% of the secondary and tertiary healthcare facilities are in urban areas, inaccessible to the rural population. This gap between the accessible eye care and the people in need cab be bridged with the help of a stereoscopic robotized teleophthalmic drone slit lamp. This slit lamp was conceptualized and developed by Ophthalmic Biophysics Center. Later, ten such slit lamps were replicated at L V Prasad Eye Institute, installed at 8 different locations of its network, and examined over 1500 patients. As a result, rural populations in remote areas have received eye care via drone slit lamp, thus integrating community care.
