This concert inaugurates the weeklong Knight Opening Festival with Ellen Taaffee Zwilich’s Celebration Overture, Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé Suite 1 & 2, and Schumann’s piano concerto in A minor.
Ellen Taaffee Zwilich, one of America’s most prolific composers, was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music. A Miami Native, it is only fitting to inaugurate the week-long Knight Center for Music Innovation Opening Festival with her Celebration Overture.
The winner of the 2023 FSO Piano Concerto Competition, Hongxi Li, performs a romantic era masterpiece and the concert concludes with Maurice Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe. Based on the pastoral romance of the same name by Greek writer Longus, Ravel’s work was originally composed as a ballet for the Russian impresario Sergei Diaghilev and his newly formed Ballets Russes. Ravel’s orchestral version features two suites, which are audience favorites and symphonic repertory staples.
