The UM and FIU clubs of the Surfrider Foundation non-profit invite you to attend a free screening of the recent and groundbreaking documentary film "Havana Libre."
HAVANA LIBRE | 2022 | DIRECTOR: Corey McLean | RUNNING TIME: 1H 22M | NOT RATED
Shot over the past four years, this documentary feature shares a transformational period in Cuba’s history and follows the fight to legitimize surfing in the country despite legalities.
In Cuba, where people fled en masse from Fidel Castro’s regime, surfing and other water activities have been banned for decades. Today, surfing exists in a murky legal gray area and is viewed with suspicion by the Cuban authorities.
Despite these challenges, a group of passionate Cuban surfers is determined to carve out a place for surfing in the country's culture of athletic excellence and towards their aspiration of an Olympic team. "Havana Libre" is a story of people following their passion at great danger to themselves and ultimately begs the question: what would you risk to chase your dreams?
This collaborative event will offer Cuban cuisine and music before the screening, as well as numerous giveaways. Join us for a beautifully conveyed, award-winning film that touches upon the political strife in Cuba and dives into the untold story of a group of unwavering, passionate surfers.
Admission is FREE but registration required at link above.
