https://cosfordcinema.com/event/guess-whos-coming-to-dinner-special-free-screening/In celebration of Black History Month, the University of Miami's United Black Students, the Richter Library, UTrailblazers and the Cosford Cinema are proud to present a screening of 1967’s Oscar-winning “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13.
Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn play the parents of a young woman (Katharine Houghton) who brings home her fiancee John (Sidney Poitier) to meet her family without having told them he is African-American. Roy Glenn and Beah Richards play John’s parents, who are just as taken by surprise at the couple’s announcement.
Directed by Stanley Kramer, “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” was a box office smash and was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, winning two (Best Actress for Hepburn and Best Original Screenplay for William Rose). The movie was a cultural trailblazer upon its original release and continues to influence filmmakers today: The new comedy “You People,” starring Jonah Hill, Eddie Murphy and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, qualifies as a loose remake.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by UM Film Professor Dr. Terri Francis. Panelists include Dr. Evalina Bestman, cousin of the late Sidney Poitier; UM Student Government President Jamie Williams; KiAnna Dorsey, Stamps Scholar and student of Motion Pictures at the UM Honors School of Communication; and Chase Johnson, a Motion Pictures Production Major at UM.
Admission is free but registration required at link above.
“‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner'” is a joy to see, an evening of superb entertainment. It will make you laugh and may even make you cry. When old, gray-haired, weather-beaten Spencer Tracy turns to Katharine Hepburn and declares, by God, that he DOES remember what it is like to be in love, there is nothing to do but believe him.” – Roger Ebert
