About this Event
The oxygen isotope compositions of ancient carbonates have been used for over 70 years to estimate ancient ocean temperatures. One caveat in this field of research is the concern that diagenesis may have altered the oxygen isotope composition of the original carbonate. In this talk, I will discuss the use of triple oxygen isotope geochemistry to ascertain the degree of alteration of ancient sedimentary materials. We find that the novel triple isotope method can unambiguously identify altered marine materials, and can actually be used to ‘see through’ the diagenesis to reconstruct the original isotopic composition of the sediment and corresponding temperatures of formation. Applications to carbonates and ancient cherts will be discussed.
