This timely conversation features leading voices whose scholarship, curatorial work, and artistic practice have helped redefine the study and presentation of Afro-Cuban art.
Dr. Michael J. Bustamante (Emilio Bacardí Moreau Chair in Cuban and Cuban-American Studies and Director of Academic Programs at the Cuban Heritage Collection at the University of Miami) will moderate this compelling discussion featuring Dr. Alejandro de la Fuente (Harvard University), Dr. Bárbaro Martínez-Ruiz (Indiana University Bloomington), and Juana Valdés, artist and professor (University of Massachusetts Amherst).
Drawing on the exhibitions El Pasado Mío / My Own Past: Afrodescendant Contributions to Cuban Art and Afrocubanismo: Highlights from the Ramón and Nercys Cernuda Collection (both guest curated by Dr. de la Fuente), this panel will explore how artists, scholars, and cultural institutions are reshaping our understanding of Cuban art by centering the creativity, experiences, and contributions of Afrodescendant communities. Spanning more than two centuries of artistic production, the discussion will examine the intersections of race, identity, historical memory, modernism, and artistic practice, while considering the role of museums, archives, and scholarship in recovering overlooked histories and expanding the canon of Cuban art.
*Please park in the Pavia Garage and proceed to the Lowe Art Museum where students will be on hand to guide guests to Storer Auditorium located in the University of Miami Business School, 5250 University Drive, Coral Gables FL, 33146 (a short walk from the Lowe). After the panel, guests will proceed to the Lowe Art Museum, 1301 Stanford Drive, Coral Gables FL, 33146 for the reception and exhibition viewing.
