The Ethics of Horror: Research Issues in Popular Film and Fiction
Stephanie Larson, PhD, Case Western Reserve University
In addition to being popular works of art and entertainment, horror films and fiction often deal with issues central to the field of bioethics. Drawing upon films like Jordan Peele’s Get Out, Stephen King’s Carrie, Octavia Butler’s Bloodchild, and John Carpenter’s The Thing, this Dialogue will consider how horror films can be used to facilitate public education and engagement with research ethics.
Dr. Larson is a lecturer at Case Western Reserve University. She is an American Society for Bioethics and the Humanities-certified Health Care Ethics Consultant and a graduate of the Cleveland Clinic’s Postdoctoral Fellowship in Advanced Bioethics. Dr. Larson holds a PhD in English from Emory University. Her scholarship has appeared in The Journal of Medical Humanities, The American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Literature and Medicine, Disability Studies Quarterly, The Journal of Humanities in Rehabilitation, and The Journal of Clinical Ethics.
