Blockchain-enabled Data Sharing: Science’s New Digital Frontier?

Investigators rely on an endless supply of de-identified data to try to realize the promise of artificial intelligence in healthcare. Diverse datasets are increasingly procured in clinical rather than research settings, often without patient knowledge, and this can accentuate an ethical double standard for consent to secondary data use that can benefit institutions and private companies. New incentive structures powered by the blockchain, however, are poised to alter how patients exercise agency and control over downstream uses of their data – with consequences for the future of secondary data markets and data-driven innovations in healthcare. This Dialogue explores ethical, legal and social implications of blockchain-enabled data sharing across clinical and research environments.
Dr. Rahimzadeh is a Postdoctoral Fellow with the Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics with support from a National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) Ethical, Legal and Social Implications (ELSI) Program training grant. Her applied bioethics research investigates the policies, practices and problems of sharing genomic and related health data.
