“Departures” traces motion, momentum, and musical defiance—works that launch into new territory and never look back.
The journey begins with Jennifer Jolley’s March!, a gleefully subversive take on the parade-ground march that mingles satire with swagger. Bernstein’s Candide Suite, in Clare Grundman’s wind arrangement, follows with a whirlwind of wit, optimism, and orchestral sparkle drawn from one of Broadway’s most dazzling scores.
Australian composer Holly Harrison pushes the pulse further in Splinter, where jagged riffs collide and recombine, propelling the ensemble through bursts of rhythmic energy. The program closes with William Schuman’s iconic version of Chester—a Revolutionary-era hymn recast as a steadfast anthem, fusing historical resolve with forward drive.
From playful parody to revolutionary fervor, “Departures” celebrates the exhilaration of breaking away and forging ahead.
