About this Event
Cooper Fellow Lecture by Professor of Spanish, Viviana Diaz Balsera, PhD.
Title: The Hostile Paradise: Facing the Franciscan Missions in La Florida, 1587-1763.
Abstract: The presentation will offer an overview of the Franciscan missions in La Florida and the Indigenous peoples who engaged most intimately with the friars. The talk will specifically address extant Spanish-Timucua religious imprints, co-produced at the height of missionary activity by two Franciscans and unacknowledged multilingual Timucua intellectuals. Recent breakthroughs in the field are providing contemporary scholars access to English translations of the Timucua versions of these imprints. Timucua is the first Native American language in present United States to have been recorded in Latin script.
