Gerard Schwarz, conductor
Carlos Lopez, graduate conductor
Chinese-American composer Bright Sheng infuses Western culture with Asian culture in music, and is celebrated throughout the world for his compositions. Following the traditional Tibetan dance beat, Tibetan Swing invokes the beauty of the well-known long sleeve-swinging and rhythmic foot stomps of Tibetan music. The 2022 FSO Harp Concerto Competition winner will join graduate conductor Carlos Lopez to perform Ginastera’s harp concerto. The harp is usually seen as an angelic and delicate instrument, but Ginastera turns that idea on its head by showcasing the solo harp as a percussive and rhythmic instrument, full of color and vitality. The concert concludes with Prokofiev’s fifth symphony. Written in the Soviet Union and performed while the Second World War was still raging on, this popular symphony of Prokofiev is full of hidden messages, poking jabs at the Soviet authoritarian state.
