The University of Miami presents Known/Unknown, an exhibition by Master of Fine Arts candidate Catherine Kramer. The title of the exhibition “Known/Unknown” comes from the overarching experience the artist had while creating this body of work. Taking inspiration from Carl Jung’s process of Active Imagination, Catherine Kramer intentionally works with subconsciously produced imagery while creating her artwork. Because she is working with subconscious materials, each piece becomes a mystery she must solve: “What was the reason I felt called to make this? What does this image symbolize? How does it fit within the larger narrative of the work?”
Catherine describes this method of artist production as as a form of self discovery where she is placed in both the role of creator and viewer, exploring the artworks’ meaning alongside the audience. There will be a reception for the artist on Saturday, April 20, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Catherine Kramer grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and graduated in 2021 with a BFA in printmaking. Now pursuing her MFA in printmaking at the University of Miami, Catherine Kramer’s body of work explores themes of transformation, cycles, and connection with the goal of understanding herself and the universal human experience a bit more deeply.
Known/Unknown is on view until April 26, 2024, at the University of Miami Gallery in the Wynwood Building, 2750 NW 3rd Avenue, Suite 4, Miami, FL 33127.
