Julia Keefe (Nez Perce) is an acclaimed Native American jazz vocalist, actor, and educator currently based in New York City.
In celebration of Native American and Indigenous Heritage Month, Julia will discuss with Dr. Mark Lomanno her work as a musician, band leader, educator, and indigenous rights advocate. As director of the Julia Keefe Indigenous Big Band, Julia is forwarding the already substantial contributions of Indigenous artists to the medium of jazz. A graduate of UM, Julia's professional career has spanned over 20 years and she has headlined marquee events at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C., as well as opened for the likes of 20-time GRAMMY Award winner Tony Bennett and 4-time GRAMMY Award winner Esperanza Spalding.
