About this Event
The Sylvester Junior Faculty Lecture Series showcases the exceptional work being done by early-career faculty members and provides a unique opportunity for informal critique and scientific discussion among faculty at all levels. In this talk, Dr. Truong-Vu will present an investigation of Vietnamese Americans' HPV and HPV vaccine-related knowledge and attitudes, and their discussions with their healthcare providers. Vietnamese Americans have some of the highest rates of HPV-attributable cervical cancer in the U.S. This study analyzes qualitative interviews with 41 Vietnamese American parents in Southern California who report relying on healthcare provider recommendations to vaccinate their children against HPV. Findings illuminate how gender norms, racial stereotypes, and lack of medical knowledge intersect to influence health disparities.
