About this Event
The UM Office of Emergency Management regularly conducts virtual Active Shooter
Response Training with the University Community. The course is 1 hour and 15 minutes
in length and consists of a presentation, discussion, and online group activities that
incorporate the latest Department of Homeland Security guidance on best practice
responses for those who encounter active shooter situations.
The course takes a holistic approach to mitigating active shooter incidents and covers
awareness, avoidance, and appropriate actions for response and reporting of
concerning behaviors prior to an incident ever taking place. In addition, expert
instructors discuss how to respond, what to look for, and how to prepare yourself to
survive an active shooter event if you are in the area or nearby when it occurs. Finally,
the course concludes with covering law enforcement’s and the University’s response to
various potentially dangerous situations including an active shooter or any mass-
casualty event. Topics include: the Emergency Notification Network (ENN) Alerts,
interacting with first responders, personal preparedness, and other initiatives of the
University designed to keep our Students, Staff, and Faculty as safe as possible.
Once you are registered, you will receive a reminder email and Zoom link for the
training session. A web camera and microphone capability are strongly preferred to
promote interactivity but not required.
Closed sessions are also available for specific groups, buildings, or departments (with a
minimum class size of 15), and may be scheduled at whatever date/time best
accommodates the participants. Please contact the Office of Emergency Management
at oem@miami.edu if you are interested in booking a class for a specific group.
