A Conversation with Betty Osceola
Moderated by Professor Traci Ardren, Ph.D., Department of Anthropology
Betty Osceola is an environmentalist and educator who has been leading local efforts for Everglades protection and restauration for many decades. A member of the Panther Clan of the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, she has worked tirelessly to protect the lands of her ancestors and community for future generations, fostering diverse coalitions among Indigenous peoples, Everglades residents, scientists, environmental activists, and other concerned citizens. An airboat captain, she operates the Buffalo Tiger Airboat Rides on Tamiami Trail in Miami. She is the 2018 recipient of the John Kabler Grassroots Activism Award, conferred annually by the Everglades Coalition for exceptional work to engage and educate the community about environmental restoration. Her story is featured in the 2019 PBS feature, The Swamp.
