DESCRIPTION:Flat Space\, Deep Learning: Using Project and Team-based Learni
ng to Promote Ownership of Learning - Lunch & Learn with Dr. Eric Mazur\n
\nThe teaching of physics to engineering students has remained stagnant fo
 r close to a century. In this novel team-based\, project-based approach\,
we break the mold by giving students ownership of their learning. This new
course has no standard lectures or exams\, yet students' conceptual gains
are significantly greater than those obtained in traditional courses. The
course blends a number of best practices to deliver a learning experience
that helps students develop important skills\, including communication\,
estimation\, problem solving\, and team skills\, in addition to a solid co
nceptual understanding of physics. \n\n \n\nWednesday\, April 2\n\n12:30-2
 :00pm\n\nLocation: Richter Library\, Room 102B\n\n \n\n\n\nWe are pleased
to welcome Dr. Eric Mazur\, our inaugural Ilene M. Dresner Distinguished V
isiting Scholar to the University of Miami! Dr. Mazur is the Balkanski Pr
ofessor of Physics and Applied Physics and Area Chair of Applied Physics a
t Harvard University\, Member of the Faculty of Education at the Harvard G
raduate School of Education\, and Past President of the Optical Society. A
n internationally recognized scientist and researcher\, he leads a vigorou
s research program in optical physics in the Physics Department at Harvard
University. Mazur founded several companies and plays an active role in i
ndustry. In addition to his work in optical physics\, Mazur has been very
active in education. In 1990 he began developing Peer Instruction\, a met
hod for teaching large lecture classes interactively. He is the author of
 Peer Instruction: A User's Manual (Prentice Hall\, 1997)\, a book that exp
lains how to teach large lecture classes interactively. Dr. Mazur's teachi
ng method has developed a large following\, both nationally and internatio
nally\, and has been adopted across many disciplines. Dr. Mazur is author
  or co-author of 380 scientific publications\, 52 patents\, and several bo
oks\, including the Principles and Practice of Physics (Pearson\, 2015)\,
a book that presents a groundbreaking new approach to teaching introductor
 y calculus-based physics.
