The sessions are led by Kelly Miller, a Certified Mindfulness Teacher (MMTCP), Director of Mindfulness and Well-Being Programs, and Associate Dean for Learning and Research Services in the University of Miami Libraries and Professor Scott Rogers, Director of the University of Miami School of Law’s Mindfulness in Law Program. Guest teachers are also occasionally invited.

Alejandro Restrepo Montoya of Estudio Central is a Doctor of Engineering and Architecture, who graduated with academic honors from the Technical University of Munich, Germany in 2018. He also graduated with academic honors from the Pontifical Bolivarian University (UPB) in Medellín in 1996. He is a Director of Strategic Urban Projects for Medellín from 2016 to 2019, and Director of Urban Planning and Architecture for Medellín since January 2024. He is a holder of three scientific patents in Colombia and Panama. He has completed projects in Sarajevo, Mexico, Panama, the Dominican Republic, the United States, and various cities in Colombia. His work has been recognized internationally and nationally with professional and academic awards and recognitions. He has taught at universities in Switzerland, Germany, the United States, Japan, Brazil, and Colombia.

While we understand that this information is most important for people who may not
have experience with preparing for and responding to hurricanes and tropical storms,
we also stress that this training is appropriate for all levels of experience with hurricanes
and strongly recommend it to everyone. Each class offers the opportunity for brief
discussion of previous experiences and tips/best practices learned from those who have
been through previous storms. There are many things we can learn from each other in
order to become a more resilient community. All faculty, staff, and students are
encouraged to register.

Once you are registered, you will receive a reminder email and Zoom link for the
training session. A web camera and microphone capability are strongly preferred to
promote interactivity but not required.

Speaker bio:
Dr. Thomas Diefenbach joined the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center in 2024 as Assistant Director of the Cytometry and Imaging Shared Resource (CISR). He received his Ph.D. in developmental neurobiology at the University of Alberta, Canada, followed by postdoctoral training at the University of Utah School of Medicine and Tufts University Medical School. Prior to joining the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Dr. Diefenbach ran imaging operations at the Imaging Core of the Developmental Disabilities Research Center at Children’s Hospital in Boston; held an Instructor of Neurology appointment with the Harvard Medical School; worked at the Research Laboratory of Electronics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), developing biological assays for automated high-throughput imaging systems and managing a two-photon core facility; and managed an advanced optical imaging core facility at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston, MA.

Dr. Michael J. Bustamante (Emilio Bacardí Moreau Chair in Cuban and Cuban-American Studies and Director of Academic Programs at the Cuban Heritage Collection at the University of Miami) will moderate this compelling discussion featuring Dr. Alejandro de la Fuente (Harvard University), Dr. Bárbaro Martínez-Ruiz (Indiana University Bloomington), and Juana Valdés, artist and professor (University of Massachusetts Amherst).

Drawing on the exhibitions El Pasado Mío / My Own Past: Afrodescendant Contributions to Cuban Art and Afrocubanismo: Highlights from the Ramón and Nercys Cernuda Collection (both guest curated by Dr. de la Fuente), this panel will explore how artists, scholars, and cultural institutions are reshaping our understanding of Cuban art by centering the creativity, experiences, and contributions of Afrodescendant communities. Spanning more than two centuries of artistic production, the discussion will examine the intersections of race, identity, historical memory, modernism, and artistic practice, while considering the role of museums, archives, and scholarship in recovering overlooked histories and expanding the canon of Cuban art.

The Sylvester Design and Management of Cancer Clinical Trials Course launched in 2019 to provide everyone involved in developing and managing clinical trials with key information to advance translational clinical research, foster better clinical trial design, and ultimately improve patient care.

We believe that clinical research education works best when people learn together—not in silos. This course brings the full research team together, including PIs, advanced practice providers, nurses, clinical research coordinators, regulatory and lab staff, other clinical research professionals, PhD scientists, and trainees at all levels.

Throughout the live course and/or by watching course recordings, participants learn basic research concepts and principles that underlie the design and actual day-to-day conduct of cancer clinical trials. Participants gain a strong foundation in clinical research, along with content tailored to different team roles and experience levels. By learning in a shared virtual environment, attendees build common understanding, strengthen teamwork, and become better equipped to collaborate for clinical trial success.

Open to alumni, veterans, students, faculty, families, and community members, this event offers an opportunity to come together in reflection, remembrance, and unity.

The course takes a holistic approach to mitigating active shooter incidents and covers
awareness, avoidance, and appropriate actions for response and reporting of
concerning behaviors prior to an incident ever taking place. In addition, expert
instructors discuss how to respond, what to look for, and how to prepare yourself to
survive an active shooter event if you are in the area or nearby when it occurs. Finally,
the course concludes with covering law enforcement’s and the University’s response to
various potentially dangerous situations including an active shooter or any mass-
casualty event. Topics include: the Emergency Notification Network (ENN) Alerts,
interacting with first responders, personal preparedness, and other initiatives of the
University designed to keep our Students, Staff, and Faculty as safe as possible.

Once you are registered, you will receive a reminder email and Zoom link for the
training session. A web camera and microphone capability are strongly preferred to
promote interactivity but not required.

Closed sessions are also available for specific groups, buildings, or departments (with a
minimum class size of 15), and may be scheduled at whatever date/time best
accommodates the participants. Please contact the Office of Emergency Management

Leopold Banchini architects aims to develop an eclectic and non-dogmatic architecture celebrating simplicity, economy and sustainability. We see architecture as a tool to support unexpected and diverse ways of living together and refuse to use buildings as representations of power, wealth or cultural superiority. We value the poetry of construction over composition and admire direct answers to unique sites and contexts. We look for humble aesthetics based on the veracity of expression against preconceived functionalism. We use creativity to encourage alternative models to commercial methods of production and expand the traditional definitions of project making using DIY and re-use cultures as means of emancipation. We challenge established relations of knowledge supremacies and admire the beauty of neo-vernacular buildings and popular intelligence. We see the origins of architectural elements beyond borders and historical periods. We place political and environmental considerations at the very heart of our practice and address architecture as a form of social action.

The University of Miami Department of Art & Art History presents Pressure, a two-artist exhibition featuring the work of Jeff Larson and Richard Rodriguez. Celebrate the opening on Thursday, September 17, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the University of Miami Gallery at The Chapel.

Pressure considers the forces that shape us, both seen and unseen. It is the weight of the atmosphere, the imprint of a hand in clay, the transfer of ink from plate to paper. It is also memory, expectation, inheritance, and desire. Though intangible, pressure leaves a trace.

Through printmaking, ceramics, and assemblage, Richard Rodriguez and Jeff Larson explore how force becomes form. Rodriguez's monotypes draw upon Indigenous visual traditions and personal heritage, layering gesture and mark as records of identity and remembrance. Larson's vessels bear the evidence of touch and labor, embodying both containment and vulnerability while holding space for reflection and absence.

Throughout the exhibition, clay yields, surfaces receive impressions, and materials become repositories of lived experience. What accumulates internally finds expression outwardly. Like weather shaping a landscape, pressure alters, transforms, and reveals. Rather than a burden alone, Pressure presents force as a generative condition, one through which memory takes shape, identities emerge, and meaning is made visible.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Jeff Larson’s practice begins in the space between image and object, where memory gathers like clay in the hollow of a vessel. After fifteen years teaching fine art photography at the university level, he turned his attention toward an expanded studio practice in ceramics. Born and raised in Wisconsin and grew up in Washington, D.C., during the 1960s and 1970s, Larson developed a sustained engagement with a broad range of artistic media, each offering a different way to hold, mark, and translate experience.

His current work approaches the vessel as both a physical form and a poetic structure, bringing together the grain of printed surfaces, the ghosted depth of photographic imagery, and the tactile weight of clay. Through these materials, he creates layered assemblages that evoke the human body, the pressure of touch, and the traces of lived experience. He is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics, deepening his material research while preparing to establish an independent studio practice.

Richard Rodriguez is currently pursuing an MFA in Printmaking at the University of Miami, his practice is grounded in an ongoing investigation of calligraphy as an expanded language, where text dissolves into gesture and form. Rooted in a sensibility that moves between memory and materiality, his work situates itself within a lineage that engages both abstraction and the diasporic condition.

Drawing on his Mexican Indigenous heritage, Rodriguez constructs a visual system in which calligraphy ceases to function solely as a linguistic sign and becomes a plastic structure. The oscillation between legibility and abstraction—at times recalling strategies associated with analytical cubism—introduces a productive tension between what can be read and what can only be perceived. Within this shift, the artist develops an intimate archive in which marks operate as carriers of experiences not fully translatable, establishing a bridge between cultural inheritance and contemporary context.

The Sylvester Design and Management of Cancer Clinical Trials Course launched in 2019 to provide everyone involved in developing and managing clinical trials with key information to advance translational clinical research, foster better clinical trial design, and ultimately improve patient care.

We believe that clinical research education works best when people learn together—not in silos. This course brings the full research team together, including PIs, advanced practice providers, nurses, clinical research coordinators, regulatory and lab staff, other clinical research professionals, PhD scientists, and trainees at all levels.

Throughout the live course and/or by watching course recordings, participants learn basic research concepts and principles that underlie the design and actual day-to-day conduct of cancer clinical trials. Participants gain a strong foundation in clinical research, along with content tailored to different team roles and experience levels. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 35 in D major, K. 385 opens the program with a festive and bold four movement work from 1782. Often referred to as the “Haffner” Symphony, named after the Haffner family who commissioned the work. Originally conceived as a serenade, Mozart later transforms the piece into the symphony heard today.

The program continues to W. A. Mozart’s Flute Concerto in D major, K. 314/285d. This charming, yet demanding piece was adapted from his Oboe Concerto in C major, K. 314. While written during a time when Mozart was struggling with deadlines and only delivering a few of the works he was commissioned, this piece has quickly become a staple in his repertoire.

The concert concludes with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74. Premiered just nine days before the composer’s death, it was the last of his works to be premiered in his lifetime. Tchaikovsky titled the work “Pathétique” (from the Russian “Pateticheskaya”), suggesting a deeply passionate and emotional character, often interpreted as reflecting underlying suffering.

(2011), magna cum laude, and is currently Counsel at LALIVE in London, where he specializes in international commercial and investment arbitration and litigation across common and civil law jurisdictions. His practice focuses particularly on disputes arising from major construction and infrastructure projects, advising international clients across industries including nuclear energy, oil and gas, mining, manufacturing, financial services, and insurance. Kevin has extensive experience with leading international arbitration rules, including ICC, LCIA, Swiss Rules, UNCITRAL, and ICSID. He has also been recognized by Legal 500 UK for his outstanding ability to analyze both the legal and commercial implications of potential arbitrations.

Dr. Saikou Y. Diallo, PhD, is a Program Manager at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and an internationally recognized researcher and technology leader with more than two decades of experience in modeling and simulation, artificial intelligence and machine learning, complex systems, and advanced computing. His work focuses on developing analytical and simulation capabilities that support complex decision-making and the transition of emerging technologies into real-world applications. Prior to his current role, Dr. Diallo held senior research leadership positions at Old Dominion University's Virginia Modeling, Analysis & Simulation Center (VMASC), including Chief Scientist and Director of Research Development.

Join us for an evening with Cristina Soriano as she discusses her new book project, “Between Two Crowns: Trinidad and the Trans-imperial Age of Revolutions” in a presentation moderated by Jay I. Kislak Chair and Curator Daniel Arbino.

In the book, Soriano explores revolutionary transformations in the Atlantic World from the perspective of a trans-imperial colony. She focuses on the island of Trinidad in the late 18th century during the transition from Spanish to British rule, analyzing the ways by which imperial forces and colonial governments implemented innovative empire-building strategies to deal with revolutionary change.

“Between Two Crowns” seeks to reconstruct the history of the multiple “experiments” undertaken by the Spanish and British empires in a multiracial, multilingual, and multicultural island during the challenging period of the Atlantic Revolutions.

Following the presentation, there will be a Q&A with the audience.

Rooted in the experiences and material culture of the Caribbean diaspora, Morel Doucet’s ceramics, portraits, and mixed-media works explore migration, climate change, cultural memory, and identity. Drawing from his Haitian heritage and Miami upbringing, Doucet transforms vessels, botanical forms, photographs, and found objects into powerful reflections on home, resilience, and the memories, traditions, and ancestral knowledge carried across oceans and generations.

A song as a sonic and literary manifestation is life’s soundscape, a unique, cathartic memento as well as a powerful political tool. A song can also be an important historical text. A person’s testimonio (testimony), life views, triumphs, aphorisms, and struggles can be expressed in song lyrics. In this way, song lyrics can transmit ways of knowing and theorizing about life. It can also be viewed as alternative ways of creating knowledge. When practiced in community, songwriting can be a powerful exercise in consensus building and collective knowledge production. My talk will discuss the collective songwriting process as it is utilized by Chican@ Artivistas in East L.A. I will share the history and development of the method, the different stages of the process and the significance it has had in Chicano Latino communities in East LA.

The Sylvester Design and Management of Cancer Clinical Trials Course launched in 2019 to provide everyone involved in developing and managing clinical trials with key information to advance translational clinical research, foster better clinical trial design, and ultimately improve patient care.

We believe that clinical research education works best when people learn together—not in silos. This course brings the full research team together, including PIs, advanced practice providers, nurses, clinical research coordinators, regulatory and lab staff, other clinical research professionals, PhD scientists, and trainees at all levels.

Throughout the live course and/or by watching course recordings, participants learn basic research concepts and principles that underlie the design and actual day-to-day conduct of cancer clinical trials. Participants gain a strong foundation in clinical research, along with content tailored to different team roles and experience levels. By learning in a shared virtual environment, attendees build common understanding, strengthen teamwork, and become better equipped to collaborate for clinical trial success.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) I-Corps Southeast Hub provides specialized training to teams interested in exploring the commercial viability of their ideas for products and businesses based on their own inventions, university intellectual property, or any STEM-related technology. This 7-week cohort is tailored specifically for life sciences innovators - including researchers, clinicians, and entrepreneurs working in related fields.

The I-Corps program is designed to equip scientists, engineers, and innovators from med tech, health tech, drugs, devices, diagnostics, theraputics, etc. with the skills to expand their focus beyond the confines of the university laboratory.

Rowan Seaford, Director
Rowan joined Carmody Groarke in 2012. With over 20 years of experience in-practice spanning mixed-use regeneration, residential projects and public buildings, she has played a key role in some of the practice’s most recognizable projects—including the Stirling Prize shortlisted Windermere Jetty Museum. Rowan is currently leading a major student housing project in central London for the London School of Economics.

Rowan has a keen eye for detail and relishes the challenge of working within sensitive heritage settings to unlock the full potential of a site or a building. She sits on the Tower Hamlets Design Review Panel, has chaired RIBA Awards juries and has delivered numerous talks on the studio's work and professional practice.

In 2026, Rowan was shortlisted for the MJ Long Award for Excellence in Practice for her work on Power Hall at the Science and Industry Museum, Manchester.

Carmody Groarke
Carmody Groarke is a London-based architectural practice founded in 2006 by Kevin Carmody and Andy Groarke. The practice has developed a reputation for its international work on a wide range of commercial, arts, cultural, heritage, and residential projects.

Current projects include a significant refurbishment and extension to the Design Museum in Ghent, Belgium; a new archive building for the national collection of the British Library in Yorkshire; the Bibliothèque Nationale de France Conservation Centre in Amiens, France; the London School of Economics (LSE) Bankside House; and the heritage restoration and significant extension of the London Wall Buildings in the City of London.

Completed work include the critically acclaimed Windermere Jetty Museum in the Lake District and a temporary home for Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s Hill House.nThe practice recently completed the transformation of a former 1970s textile workshop on Bethnal Green Road into a contemporary, low-carbon workspace—a compelling model for adaptive commercial reuse.

Carmody Groarke’s work has been recognized through several prestigious architectural awards, most recently the Architects’ Journal Design of the Year in 2025. Previous projects have been shortlisted for the EU Mies van der Rohe Award, the 2021 RIBA Building of the Year Stirling Prize, and the Civic Trust National Panel Special Award 2020. Four monographs of the practice’s work have been published by El Croquis, 2G, AMAG, and A+U.

The Sylvester Design and Management of Cancer Clinical Trials Course launched in 2019 to provide everyone involved in developing and managing clinical trials with key information to advance translational clinical research, foster better clinical trial design, and ultimately improve patient care.

We believe that clinical research education works best when people learn together—not in silos. This course brings the full research team together, including PIs, advanced practice providers, nurses, clinical research coordinators, regulatory and lab staff, other clinical research professionals, PhD scientists, and trainees at all levels.

Throughout the live course and/or by watching course recordings, participants learn basic research concepts and principles that underlie the design and actual day-to-day conduct of cancer clinical trials. Participants gain a strong foundation in clinical research, along with content tailored to different team roles and experience levels. By learning in a shared virtual environment, attendees build common understanding, strengthen teamwork, and become better equipped to collaborate for clinical trial success.

been through previous storms. There are many things we can learn from each other in
order to become a more resilient community. All faculty, staff, and students are
encouraged to register.

promote interactivity but not required.

The Frost Wind Ensemble presents Shared Spaces, an evening of dynamic contemporary music that explores collaboration, contrast, and the evolving relationship between soloist and ensemble. At the center of the program are two compelling works that challenge traditional roles and invite the audience into vibrant, shared sonic landscapes.

The concert features Mason Bates’s Sideman, performed with acclaimed percussionist Svet Stoyanov. A genre‑blurring work infused with kinetic energy and rhythmic drive, Sideman reimagines the concerto relationship by placing the soloist both within and alongside the ensemble—at times leading, at times blending, constantly reshaping the musical dialogue. Stoyanov’s virtuosic presence brings clarity and intensity to Bates’s electrifying sound world, where acoustic color and modern rhythmic language collide.

Complementing Sideman is the world premiere of James David’s Concerto for Wind Ensemble, a bold new work written specifically for the expressive and dramatic possibilities of the modern wind ensemble. The concerto expands the idea of “shared space,” creating moments of intimacy, tension, and collective power as solo voices emerge from—and recede into—the larger ensemble texture. Together, the two works frame a compelling conversation about individuality, collaboration, and the future of large‑ensemble music.

Shared Spaces reflects the Frost Wind Ensemble’s commitment to contemporary voices, innovative programming, and meaningful artistic partnerships. By pairing a landmark work of the contemporary repertoire with an important new premiere, this concert offers audiences an engaging and forward‑looking musical experience—one that celebrates virtuosity, creativity, and the powerful connections forged through sound.

The course takes a holistic approach to mitigating active shooter incidents and covers
awareness, avoidance, and appropriate actions for response and reporting of
concerning behaviors prior to an incident ever taking place. In addition, expert
instructors discuss how to respond, what to look for, and how to prepare yourself to
survive an active shooter event if you are in the area or nearby when it occurs. Finally,
the course concludes with covering law enforcement’s and the University’s response to
various potentially dangerous situations including an active shooter or any mass-
casualty event. Topics include: the Emergency Notification Network (ENN) Alerts,
interacting with first responders, personal preparedness, and other initiatives of the
University designed to keep our Students, Staff, and Faculty as safe as possible.

Once you are registered, you will receive a reminder email and Zoom link for the
training session. A web camera and microphone capability are strongly preferred to
promote interactivity but not required.

Closed sessions are also available for specific groups, buildings, or departments (with a
minimum class size of 15), and may be scheduled at whatever date/time best

The National Science Foundation (NSF) I-Corps Southeast Hub provides specialized training to teams interested in exploring the commercial viability of their ideas for products and businesses based on their own inventions, university intellectual property, or any STEM-related technology. This 7-week cohort is tailored specifically for life sciences innovators - including researchers, clinicians, and entrepreneurs working in related fields.

The I-Corps program is designed to equip scientists, engineers, and innovators from med tech, health tech, drugs, devices, diagnostics, theraputics, etc. with the skills to expand their focus beyond the confines of the university laboratory.

Competitive Funding Available

Teams accepted into the cohort may be eligible for competitive funding to support their customer discovery efforts, helping offset costs associated with travel, interviews, and market research conducted throughout the program.

Camilo Rebelo was born in Porto. He studied at the German College and graduated from the Faculty of Architecture University of Porto in 1996. He collaborated with Eduardo Souto Moura 1994-98 and with Herzog & de Meuron 1998-99. In 2000 he founded his Architectural Studio in Oporto and since then he has created about a hundred projects, some of them in partnership with Tiago Pimentel and Susana Martins. Since 2023 partnership with Álvaro Siza for projects in Albania. He taught at the Faculty of Architecture University of Porto, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de la University of Navarra, the Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio and RAC University Shanghai. Since 2015 has a research Studio Architecture and Landscape at Politecnico di Milano. His work has been recognised through several national and international awards including the Bauwelt Award, Baku UIA Award and Douro Valley Award, as well as nominations for SECIL Award, BSI Swiss Prize and EU Mies Award. Ktima Villa was chosen by BBC2 to feature in a documentary called “The World’s Most Extraordinary Homes Underground”.

His area of research finds its dimension in between archaic - modern and abstract - figurative, and mostly developed within the relationship architecture - nature, linking urban contexts and areas of protected and classified natural landscape. Matter, its atmosphere, its constructive processes and the urgency of its uses in each context have been recognised in Portugal and abroad.

The Sylvester Design and Management of Cancer Clinical Trials Course launched in 2019 to provide everyone involved in developing and managing clinical trials with key information to advance translational clinical research, foster better clinical trial design, and ultimately improve patient care.

We believe that clinical research education works best when people learn together—not in silos. This course brings the full research team together, including PIs, advanced practice providers, nurses, clinical research coordinators, regulatory and lab staff, other clinical research professionals, PhD scientists, and trainees at all levels.

Throughout the live course and/or by watching course recordings, participants learn basic research concepts and principles that underlie the design and actual day-to-day conduct of cancer clinical trials. Participants gain a strong foundation in clinical research, along with content tailored to different team roles and experience levels. By learning in a shared virtual environment, attendees build common understanding, strengthen teamwork, and become better equipped to collaborate for clinical trial success.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) I-Corps Southeast Hub provides specialized training to teams interested in exploring the commercial viability of their ideas for products and businesses based on their own inventions, university intellectual property, or any STEM-related technology. This 7-week cohort is tailored specifically for life sciences innovators - including researchers, clinicians, and entrepreneurs working in related fields.

The I-Corps program is designed to equip scientists, engineers, and innovators from med tech, health tech, drugs, devices, diagnostics, theraputics, etc. with the skills to expand their focus beyond the confines of the university laboratory.

Competitive Funding Available

Teams accepted into the cohort may be eligible for competitive funding to support their customer discovery efforts, helping offset costs associated with travel, interviews, and market research conducted throughout the program.
