TALK TITLE: "AI & Academic Writing: Rules, Tools, and Strategies"

April Mann, EdD, is Director of the Writing Center and is a Distinguished Senior Lecturer in the Department of Writing Studies. She also provides grant-writing support to the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) at the Miller School of Medicine. April has been facilitating the College of Arts and Sciences’ Summer Writing Institute with her colleague Adina Sanchez-Garcia since 2015. The Institute helps faculty throughout the college reimagine the ways they can use writing in their courses to improve their students’ disciplinary learning. She and her colleagues are in the process of initiating a Writing Enriched Curriculum program to support faculty in other disciplines who want to effectively use writing assignments in their teaching.

For the past two years, she has been co-facilitating a Faculty Working Group for Teaching with AI. This community of practice brings faculty together to discuss their innovative work with AI in the classroom. She also presented at the Teaching in the Age of Artificial Intelligence 2024 Conference. April is co-author of several publications, most recently “The linguistic leap: Understanding, evaluating, and integrating AI in language education.” Journal of Language Teaching, (with colleagues Shai Cohen, Ludovic Mompelat, and Logan Connors). She has several manuscripts currently under contract or under consideration with colleagues in the Writing Studies Department and the School of Education and Human Development. She is also co-author (with colleagues Ava Brillat and Matthew Kaeiser) of “Crossing the Bridge: Writing and Research Bridge Programming for an Intensive English Program” in PILH: Information Literacy and Writing Studies, Volume II – Upper Level and Graduate Studies. Ed. Grace Veach. Purdue University Press, 2019. "My Dead Friend Zoe" is a dark comedy-drama that follows Merit, a U.S. Army Afghanistan veteran whose life is complicated by her bond with Zoe, her late best friend from the Army. As Merit navigates family tensions, a VA counselor, and an unexpected love interest, she remains insulated by her imagined friendship with Zoe until her estranged grandfather, struggling alone at the family lake house, forces her to confront grief, connection, and healing. At its core, the film explores friendship, family, and the many ways we process loss.

The film stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Natalie Morales, Ed Harris, and Morgan Freeman, and has earned multiple honors, including the Audience Award at the SXSW Film & TV Festival and the Grand Jury Prize for Best Narrative Feature at the 25th Woodstock Film Festival. This movie is rated R.

Student Engagement Techniques: Designing Learning Experiences That Motivate and Activate Students

Student engagement is more than participation—it emerges from the interaction between motivation and active learning. This two-part workshop introduces a research-informed framework for understanding engagement and applying it intentionally in course design.

Part 1 focuses on how motivation and active learning work together and how to design learning experiences that support both, helping faculty move beyond isolated engagement activities toward more coherent learning design.

Part 2 centers on selecting and adapting specific student engagement techniques aligned with different learning goals—from recall and analysis to problem-solving and application—while also supporting community, appropriate challenge, and learner self-awareness.

Participants will gain concrete tools to design engagement strategically across individual class sessions and entire courses.

Mindfulness for Inner Resilience

The University of Miami Libraries offers introductory mindfulness sessions designed to support inner resilience. These 45-minute online sessions introduce the fundamentals of mindfulness meditation and movement with periods of guided practice and opportunities for reflection and questions.

The sessions are led by Kelly Miller, a Certified Mindfulness Teacher (MMTCP), Director of Mindfulness and Well-Being Programs, and Associate Dean for Learning and Research Services in the University of Miami Libraries and Professor Scott Rogers, Director of the University of Miami School of Law’s Mindfulness in Law Program. Guest teachers are also occasionally invited.

Please note that in Spring 2026, Gisele Rocha, a Certified Yoga Teacher (RYT® 500) and Assistant Director in the Libraries’ Creative department will offer yoga sessions separately.

From his bebop beginnings with Charlie Parker to the cool lyricism of Kind of Blue, the orchestral sweep of Sketches of Spain, the electric experiments of Bitches Brew, and the funk-infused grooves of his final band in 1991, Davis created a catalogue that defines the jazz canon.

All sessions are open to the communities of Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe Counties, will take place virtually, and materials will be available through an online Padlet platform.

Finesse Mitchell is one of today’s most talented and versatile comedians, with a career spanning stand up, television, and film. A former Saturday Night Live cast member, he is widely recognized for his unforgettable characters and dynamic comedic style that has made him a familiar face and voice in entertainment.

His television and film credits include projects with NBC, Fox, Netflix, and Disney Channel, as well as Kenan, Outmatched, Is It Cake?, A.N.T. Farm, Who’s Your Caddy, and Mad Money. He has released four comedy specials, including Slightly Offensive, now streaming on 800 Pound Gorilla Media’s YouTube channel, and has appeared on major late night shows.

A University of Miami graduate and member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Mitchell began his comedy career in 1999 and remains a respected voice in comedy and entertainment.

Keynote Speaker • James Waugh

Senior Vice President, Franchise Story and Creative Strategy | Lucasfilm Ltd. At Lucasfilm, James Waugh has been a member of the Star Wars creative brain trust since 2016. Waugh currently leads narrative development and creative strategy across franchise lines of business including:

Franchise AnimationVideo GamesTheme ParksPublishingImmersive EntertainmentConsumer Products, andDigital/Online Content initiatives.

His professional passion lies in building fictional worlds through compelling narrative and experiential content across platform. Waugh has led Lucasfilm’s transmedia efforts for Rogue One, Solo, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker, as well as series including: The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Book of Bobafett, Star Wars Rebels, The Clone Wars, and The Bad Batch—Lego Star Wars and Star Wars Visions. He has also led the story group’s development efforts for multiple video game titles, including Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Survivor, Star Wars Outlaws, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Vader: Immortal.

Waugh spearheaded strategic initiatives such as StarWarsKids Youtube Channel, and development and launch of The High Republic, Star Wars’ first new fictional era since the Disney acquisition. In Animation, Waugh served as the Executive Producer on Star Wars: Visions vol. 1, 2 and 3 (for which he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy, and won a Lumiere for Best Animated Series), Star Wars Young Jedi Adventures (for which he was nominated for a Children's and Family Emmy), LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special, LEGO Star Wars Rebuild the Galaxy, LEGO Star Wars Terrifying Tales, LEGO Star Wars Summer Vacation, Star Wars: Galaxy of Adventures, Star Wars: Roll Out, Star Wars Galaxy of Creatures, and others in various stages of development and production.

Prior to joining Lucasfilm, Waugh served as the Sr. Director of Story & Creative Development at Blizzard Entertainment, leading the company’s Creative Development Department while overseeing narrative, IP, and transmedia for its blockbuster franchises. During this time he served as the Narrative Director for StarCraft 2 Legacy of the Void, Nova, and was the Story Director for the Overwatch franchise, leading the development and writing of its short films. Waugh also was a key leader in Blizzard’s development on projects with ABStudios and Legendary Films for which he received a Story Consultant credit for his work on Warcraft: The Beginning, the feature film directed by Duncan Jones. For Star Wars, Waugh strives to build evocative content across media and pioneer new forms of storytelling.

PANEL • AI in Higher Education

Nick Tsinoremas • MODERATOR

Nicholas F. Tsinoremas, PhD is the Founding Director of the University of Miami Institute for Data Science and Computing which was established to catalyze data-intensive research in fields ranging from medicine to earth sciences, urban planning, digital humanities, and business. He also holds faculty appointments in the Miller School of Medicine and the College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Tsinoremas received his B.A. in Chemistry from the University of Athens, Greece, and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Leeds, UK.

Dr. Tsinoremas’ research focus includes projects that combine data science and computational approaches; informatics, digital health, clinical genomics, molecular biology, computational biology, and drug discovery.

Marybeth Arcodia

Marybeth Arcodia is an Assistant Professor jointly appointed between the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Sciences Department of Atmospheric Sciences and the Frost Institute for Data Science and Computing at the University of Miami. Her research bridges Earth system predictability and prediction, integrating atmospheric science and AI-based techniques to explore variability and change across weather-to-climate scales. Her work focuses on localized impacts in future climates to further our understanding of the stressed climate system and aid in advancing preparedness for climate risk. She is a member of the US CLIVAR Predictability, Predictions, and Applications Interface Panel and the Working Group on Climate Data and Predictions for Coastal Solutions.

Clay Ewing

Clay Ewing is creative technologist with a focus on serious games, implementing game mechanics into real world applications, and social justice. As an award winning game designer and developer, Professor Ewing’s games have tackled issues such as vector borne diseases, the cost of health care, social safety nets and labor practices. His most recent game, Unsavory, is the winner of a special emphasis award at the Serious Games Showcase and Challenge for its use of social media crowdsourcing for peer learning. Clay has worked with numerous non-profits including Red Cross Red Crescent, Open Society Foundations, ROC United, Oxfam, and the AIDS & Rights Alliance for Southern Africa. His projects have been covered by The Huffington Post, NPR, Forbes, and The Consumerist. He also is the creator of Queso, an open source learning management for gamifying the classroom.

Ben Lauren

Ben Lauren is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Writing Studies at the University of Miami, where he also directs the Innovation and Society co-major. An artist-scholar whose work sits at the intersection of rhetoric, creativity, and design, he published a peer-reviewed album-book called Hold Me Down: Toward a Rhetoric of Feel with the University of Michigan Press in 2024, positioning music as a form of scholarly argument. His current research examines whether AI can function as a creative collaborator during design sprints.

Wanli Xing

Dr. Wanli Xing is a full Professor in School of Education and Human Development and Core Faculty member in Frost Institute for Data Science and Computing at the University of Miami. His research themes are:

Explore and leverage educational big data in various forms and modalities to advance the understanding of learning processes;Design and develop responsible and transparent AI, large language models, and learning analytics powered learning environments;Create innovative strategies, frameworks, and technologies for AI, Data Science, and Computing Workforce development.With these interrelated themes, he aims to push the fundamental limits of AIED and learning analytics to revolutionize STEM and online education. His research has been supported by National Science Foundation, Institute of Education Sciences, Office of Naval Research, National Institute of Standards and Technology, National Security Agency, Schmidt Family Foundation, Gates Foundation, Helios Education Foundation, Florida Department of Education and the University of Florida. Dr. Xing directs the ACE lab, standing for Advanced Computing for Education.

This panel discussion will examine how the loss of Venezuelan support, recent United States actions, and a pre-existing structural crisis are impacting Cuba’s economy and political dynamics. Speakers will assess material consequences for everyday life on the island, prospects for political change, and the risks and opportunities presented by the current U.S. approach.

This event marks the culmination of Mauricio de Miranda Parrondo’s tenure as Roberto C. Goizueta Distinguished Presidential Fellow at the Cuban Heritage Collection for spring 2026. Drawing on his expertise in the Cuban economy and joined by specialists in Cuban politics, international relations, and human rights, the panel will offer a multidimensional assessment of this pivotal juncture in the island’s history.

Following the panel conversation, there will be a Q&A with the audience. Presentations will be delivered in both English and Spanish.

Creating a clear and well‑organized Canvas course is key to helping students navigate content and succeed. Canvas offers flexible tools for structuring courses, and seeing how those tools work together can make course building easier and more effective.

In this hands‑on workshop, you’ll be introduced to the foundational Canvas tools used to structure a course and guide student progress. You’ll explore course settings and navigation, modules, and core content types, along with practical strategies for organizing materials and setting clear assignment expectations.

Workshops are held daily and designed as a flexible course-building sprint before spring ends. To respect faculty summer time, this is the ideal time to get hands-on support and learn to build courses in Canvas ahead of the fall!

📋 What You’ll Learn

✅ Course Setup & Navigation: Review and simplify key Canvas settings and navigation to create a clear student experience.

✅ Modules & Course Flow: Learn how modules organize content and support logical learning flow (weekly, unit‑based, or topic‑based).

✅ Adding Course Content: Add and organize pages, files, and assignments, including due dates, availability, and Gradebook connections.

✅ Hands‑On Course Building: Build or refine your course structure directly in a Canvas sandbox or development course.

✅ Wrap‑Up & Q&A: Reflect on course organization strategies and leave with a strong foundation for continued course building.

This is a fully hands‑on, interactive workshop. Participants will work directly in their own Canvas sandbox or development course. The course takes a holistic approach to mitigating active shooter incidents and covers
awareness, avoidance, and appropriate actions for response and reporting of
concerning behaviors prior to an incident ever taking place. In addition, expert
instructors discuss how to respond, what to look for, and how to prepare yourself to
survive an active shooter event if you are in the area or nearby when it occurs. Finally,
the course concludes with covering law enforcement’s and the University’s response to
various potentially dangerous situations including an active shooter or any mass-
casualty event. Topics include: the Emergency Notification Network (ENN) Alerts,
interacting with first responders, personal preparedness, and other initiatives of the
University designed to keep our Students, Staff, and Faculty as safe as possible.

Once you are registered, you will receive a reminder email and Zoom link for the
training session. A web camera and microphone capability are strongly preferred to
promote interactivity but not required.

Closed sessions are also available for specific groups, buildings, or departments (with a
minimum class size of 15), and may be scheduled at whatever date/time best
accommodates the participants. Please contact the Office of Emergency Management
at oem@miami.edu if you are interested in booking a class for a specific group.

Hear the World Premiere of Dr. Dorothy Hindman's "Lily in the Eye of a Hurricane" on a text by Angela Laurio, performed by guest artists soprano Jamie Jordan and percussionist Daniel Druckman of the New York Philharmonic and Juilliard School. Providing clear grading expectations and timely feedback is an essential part of the teaching and learning experience. Canvas offers several tools that help instructors manage grading efficiently while supporting transparency for students.

In this workshop, participants will explore assignment groups and weighted grading, rubrics for consistent evaluation, and tools such as SpeedGrader to streamline grading and feedback. The session will also discuss strategies for communicating feedback to students and managing grading processes more efficiently throughout a course.

Mindfulness for Inner Resilience

The University of Miami Libraries offers introductory mindfulness sessions designed to support inner resilience. These 45-minute online sessions introduce the fundamentals of mindfulness meditation and movement with periods of guided practice and opportunities for reflection and questions.

The sessions are led by Kelly Miller, a Certified Mindfulness Teacher (MMTCP), Director of Mindfulness and Well-Being Programs, and Associate Dean for Learning and Research Services in the University of Miami Libraries and Professor Scott Rogers, Director of the University of Miami School of Law’s Mindfulness in Law Program. Guest teachers are also occasionally invited.

Please note that in Spring 2026, Gisele Rocha, a Certified Yoga Teacher (RYT® 500) and Assistant Director in the Libraries’ Creative department will offer yoga sessions separately.

The Center for Global Black Studies and The Black Central Americas Project invite you to a one-day symposium that brings together scholars, community organizers, artists, and cultural workers to explore the histories and lived experiences of Black Central Americans in South Florida. Centering migration, labor, cultural place-making, and historical and cultural preservation, the symposium highlights the many ways Black Central Americans have shaped—and continue to shape—the social, political, and cultural landscapes of the region.

Through panel discussions, a keynote conversation, a film screening, and a closing sonic gathering, the symposium foregrounds Black Central American voices while creating space for dialogue across generations, disciplines, and communities.

In this hands‑on workshop, you’ll be introduced to the foundational Canvas tools used to structure a course and guide student progress. You’ll explore course settings and navigation, modules, and core content types, along with practical strategies for organizing materials and setting clear assignment expectations.

Workshops are held daily and designed as a flexible course-building sprint before spring ends. To respect faculty summer time, this is the ideal time to get hands-on support and learn to build courses in Canvas ahead of the fall!

📋 What You’ll Learn

✅ Course Setup & Navigation: Review and simplify key Canvas settings and navigation to create a clear student experience.

✅ Modules & Course Flow: Learn how modules organize content and support logical learning flow (weekly, unit‑based, or topic‑based).

✅ Adding Course Content: Add and organize pages, files, and assignments, including due dates, availability, and Gradebook connections.

✅ Hands‑On Course Building: Build or refine your course structure directly in a Canvas sandbox or development course.

Volunteers will pick up litter at sites throughout the watershed, with supplies provided and roles available for both general volunteers and community site leaders. The cleanup also supports advocacy for “Bottle Bill” recycling laws in DC and Maryland by collecting data on plastic, glass, and aluminum containers found in local waterways.

Music has long served as a quiet—yet potent—form of protest, and nowhere is that more evident than in the Soviet era, when composers encoded resistance within their scores. This season-finale concert explores that legacy in two powerhouses of twentieth-century music.

The evening opens with Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, a work whose torrential energy and daunting technical demands still astonish listeners a century after its premiere. Written during Prokofiev’s student years and completely reconstructed after the 1917 manuscript was lost, the concerto veers from sardonic wit to volcanic outbursts, mirroring the composer’s own rebellious spirit. Frost professor Naoko Takao, praised for her compelling lyricism and fearless virtuosity, takes center stage to navigate the concerto’s jagged rhythms and explosive cadenzas. A tour de force of pianistic brilliance, the work places virtuosity on full display from its poetic opening to its monumental finale.

After intermission comes Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 in E minor, completed in the uneasy months following Stalin’s death in 1953. Often interpreted as a musical portrait of the dictator and a cathartic reckoning with years of artistic repression, the symphony unfolds across four movements that swing from bleak introspection to sardonic waltz, relentless scherzo, and finally a hard-won, blazing affirmation.

Together, these two works chart a journey from individual struggle to collective catharsis, reminding us how music can speak truth when words are forbidden. Join us for an unforgettable conclusion to the season as the orchestra, under the baton of Gerard Schwarz, illuminates the defiant heart and enduring hope at the core of these Soviet masterpieces.

Guido López-Gavilán’s Obertura Bandida bursts with Cuban rhythmic vitality and bold textures, capturing the joyous defiance of music forged in revolution. Viet Cuong’s Deciduous mirrors nature’s cycles, showing how shedding the old allows new growth to emerge. The haunting Dancer in the Dark, inspired by Björk’s avant-garde film score, offers a solitary moment of vulnerability and imagination. Gustav Holst’s Second Suite in F grounds the evening in English folk tunes—timeless melodies that connect listeners to shared histories—before Alberto Ginastera’s “Danza Final” from Estancia ignites the finale with explosive South American rhythms and motion.

Cueva’s work brings an interdisciplinary lens to Andean history, displacement, and identity. During her month-long residency engaging with the Kislak Collection, she explored materials that deepened and informed her ongoing artistic research.

Cueva will share new insights from her recent work and discuss how the collection has supported and enriched her creative process.

Following the presentation, there will be a Q&A with the online audience.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Carolina Cueva was born in Lima, Peru, and lives and works in Miami, Florida. She studied at the School of Visual Arts and graduated with a B.F.A. Cueva is an interdisciplinary artist working in sculpture, performance, and 2D works of art. Her work examines identity, ancestry, and displacement through personal narrative, history, and the transcendental.

Cueva was awarded a Wavemaker Grant and an Artist Access Grant in 2021. She is currently an M.F.A. candidate at Yale University. Learn more »

Mindfulness for Inner Resilience

The University of Miami Libraries offers introductory mindfulness sessions designed to support inner resilience. These 45-minute online sessions introduce the fundamentals of mindfulness meditation and movement with periods of guided practice and opportunities for reflection and questions.

The sessions are led by Kelly Miller, a Certified Mindfulness Teacher (MMTCP), Director of Mindfulness and Well-Being Programs, and Associate Dean for Learning and Research Services in the University of Miami Libraries and Professor Scott Rogers, Director of the University of Miami School of Law’s Mindfulness in Law Program. Guest teachers are also occasionally invited.

Please note that in Spring 2026, Gisele Rocha, a Certified Yoga Teacher (RYT® 500) and Assistant Director in the Libraries’ Creative department will offer yoga sessions separately.

The enthusiasm for AI tends to obscure the many senses of the term and its widening implications for bioethics and research. In this talk Dr. Moreno will review the limits and potential of AI and indicate why the current global environment presents obstacles for AI’s that re worthy of trust.

Dr. Moreno is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, a fellow of the Hastings Center, and a member of the Committee on Human Rights of the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine. He has served as a staff member or advisor to three U.S. presidential commissions, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the UNESCO International Bioethics Committee. He is a member of the Bayer Bioethics Council and a senior advisor for the Center for Health, Ethics and Society at the University of Hamburg, Germany.

In 2018 the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities presented him with its Lifetime Achievement Award. He is a recipient of the Benjamin Rush Medal from William and Mary Law School and the Dr. Jean Mayer Award for Global Citizenship from Tufts University. His work has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, the Greenwall Foundation, the Wellcome Trust, and the U.S. Department of Defense.

His forthcoming book, Understanding Bioethics, will be published by Edward Elgar Publishing in 2027. Among his previous books are Absolutely Essential: Bioethics and the Rules-Based International Order; Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven but Nobody Wants to Die, co-authored with Amy Gutmann; Undue Risk: Secret State Experiments on Humans; and The Body Politic: The Battle Over Science in America, named a Best Book of 2011 by Kirkus Reviews. His book Mind Wars formed part of the basis of The Bourne Legacy.

Moreno has published more than a thousand papers, articles, and op-eds in venues including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Science, Nature, and Foreign Affairs. He was co-host of Making the Call, an Endeavor Content podcast, and served on President Barack Obama's transition team in 2008-09.

TALK TITLE: Teaching and Learning at the Human-Technology Frontier:  The Power of AI and Data Science

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data-driven technologies are transforming education, making personalized learning, intelligent tutoring, and scalable educational interventions more essential than ever. In this talk, Dr. Xing will present his research at the intersection of learning sciences, AI, and data science, demonstrating how AI-powered tools and large-scale data analytics can enhance STEM and computing education while equipping students for the future workforce.

Dr. Xing will begin by showcasing how his research addresses real-world educational challenges by integrating learning theories with advanced AI technologies. He will also highlight his contributions to AI cyberinfrastructure, including the development of education-specific generative AI models that have seen widespread adoption.

Beyond technological advancements, his work tackles the critical need for a well-prepared computing workforce, driving innovation in AI, data science, cybersecurity, and computer science education. Finally, Dr. Xing will outline his future research vision and funding agenda, focusing on strategies to advance AI-driven learning environments, fair and transparent data science in education, and workforce development initiatives in AI and data science.

About Dr. Wanli Xing

Professor Wanli Xing, a nationally recognized researcher working at the intersection of artificial intelligence, data science and education, joins the University of Miami this year with a joint appointment with IDSC and the School of Education and Human Development (SEHD).

The appeal of a joint appointment is both intellectual and practical, a place where advanced computing meets real-world classrooms and communities. “It’s an excellent fit because it lets me leverage expertise across both areas,” Dr. Xing said.

A major draw was IDSC’s supercomputing resources and research infrastructure. “I’m looking forward to having my research group access resources here for AI development and related work,” he said.

Location mattered, too. “Miami is a major metropolitan area so there are more opportunities, not only for collaboration within the University but also for entrepreneurship, business partnerships, and school district collaborations,” he said.

and I’m excited about opportunities 
to collaborate across disciplines."

Dr. Xing, who previously served in leadership roles supporting engineering education programs at the University of Florida, looks forward to expanding interdisciplinary work at the University of Miami. “I haven’t broken into the medical world yet, but the medical school here is very strong, and I’m excited about opportunities to collaborate across disciplines,” he said. “IDSC is a great platform for that.”

Building Large Language Models for Education

Dr. Xing’s long-term goal is to build education-specific large language models designed with schools and students in mind.

He notes that general-purpose tools like ChatGPT can be powerful but have limitations in educational settings. They can function as “black boxes,” become costly at scale (especially when supporting large numbers of students), and raise privacy concerns depending on how data is handled and how systems behave in different learning contexts.

“For certain educational scenarios, especially with kids, you can’t just rely on generic prompting and hope the models behave exactly as needed,” he said. “You want to build models that are more controlled, more transparent, and potentially cheaper. Not everything needs a very large model. Some tasks can use smaller, lower-cost models.”

Three Pillars of a Research Program

Dr. Xing describes his work as three interconnected areas. First, he designs, develops, and tests AI tools that directly support learning. One of his flagship projects is ALTER-Math, which stands for AI-augmented Learning by Teaching to Enhance and Renovate Math Learning. Grounded in the well-established idea that one of the best ways to learn is to teach, the program essentially turns middle schoolers into math teachers. Instead of positioning an AI agent as an all-knowing tutor, ALTER-Math introduces an AI agent more like a peer, one who needs help from the students. “This process helps reinforce and deepen their mathematical understanding,” Dr. Xing said. ALTER-Math has reached students across Florida, and Dr. Xing is in talks to bring the program to Broward County students.

Second, Dr. Xing uses large-scale educational data to analyze learning behaviors and learning processes. Education is increasingly data-rich, he said, as learning platforms capture information such as posts, videos watched, interactions, and discussion participation. By applying learning analytics and data mining methods in both online and in-person classes, Dr. Xing aims to generate insights that strengthen theory-driven learning science and contribute to the next wave of generative education.

Third, his work in STEM and computing workforce development connects the first two. Dr. Xing builds tools for teaching advanced topics and helps design innovative programs that introduce students to AI, data science, microelectronics, and other emerging technologies. He approaches this work as a learning scientist, developing strategies and experiences that make complex technical subjects more accessible. “We’ve explored approaches like reverse engineering to come up with new ways students can learn about advanced technological areas,” he said.

His research has been supported by multiple funders, including the NSF, Department of Education, Department of Defense, NIST, the Florida Department of Education, and various private foundations.

Teaching, Mentoring, and Building a Team

Dr. Xing will teach courses on AI in education and leads an active research team that includes postdoctoral scholars, Ph.D. students, and an AI engineer. He brought some team members with him from the University of Florida and plans to hire additional researchers. “Postdocs and Ph.D. graduates from my lab have gone on to tenure-track faculty roles at many different universities,” he said.

Life in South Florida—and a Streak of Championship Luck

Outside the lab, Dr. Xing is settling into South Florida and building a new routine. He lives in Pembroke Pines with his wife and two sons, 5 and 7. While he’s still adjusting to the traffic, he said he’s enjoying the perks of city life. “Miami has culture, sports, museums, and lots of activities,” he said. “Outside of work, my life mostly revolves around the kids.”

When he has time to unwind, he heads to the beach. He also loves swimming and playing basketball. Dr. Xing, who also enjoys watching sports, jokingly notes a pattern. While he was at Texas Tech and the University of Florida, both basketball teams advanced to the national championship game. After arriving in Miami, he was thrilled to watch his new hometown team play in the championship football game.

“They all made history while I was there!” he said.

El Pasado Mío: Afrodescent Contributions To Cuban Art

This landmark exhibition celebrates the work of forty-three Afro-Cuban artists who were active between the 1820s and the present. While several of those featured have achieved global fame (even if posthumously), many have yet to receive the attention they deserve, prominent among them a group of eleven female artists whose works have never been displayed together.

Afrocubanismo: Highlights From The Ramon and Nerycs Cernuda Collection

Artists in 1930s Cuba navigated competing pressures between academic success, avant‑garde innovation, and European modernism, giving rise to Afrocubanismo, a movement that re-centered Afro‑Cuban culture as fundamental to modern Cuban identity while remaining entangled with exoticism and racial stereotyping. Drawing on the Ramón and Nercys Cernuda Collection, the Lowe Art Museum’s exhibition—guest curated by Alejandro de la Fuente—presents key Afrocubanista works, including by Wifredo Lam, to illuminate the complex social and cultural forces shaping twentieth‑century Cuban art.

This is a prestigious designation awarded to six graduate or undergraduate students (sophomore level or above) students. The vision of the IDSC Fellows Program is to inspire a new generation of leaders in data science to cross the traditional boundaries between disciplines. PROJECT: "Integrating species connectivity into global species distribution modeling to improve climate-driven biodiversity forecasts"

Juliette Casemajor’s research investigates how climate change is reshaping the distribution of marine species, with a particular focus on the role of connectivity. Working in the AquaX lab, she combines global species distribution models with ocean based dispersal simulations to distinguish between habitats that are climatically suitable and those that are biologycally accessible. Her work lies at the intersection of marine ecology, physical oceanography and data science, aiming to provide more ecologically accurate forecasts of climate driven range shifts. As an IDSC Fellow, she plans to leverage high performance computing tools to scale her framework to tens of thousands of species, an essentiel step toward producing global-scale biodiversity projections.

Sam Courtney is a graduate student in Music Engineering Technology at the University of Miami, working under the mentorship of Dr. Christopher Bennett and Dr. Tom Collins. His research interests span digital signal processing, machine learning, and acoustics. He is a member of the Music Computing & Psychology Lab and a Research Assistant and Software Engineer for the Concerts with Humans and Artificial Intelligence project. As an IDSC Fellow, Sam will investigate direct speech-to-speech translation with a focus on audio and prosodic fidelity, exploring large-scale self-supervised pretraining on raw speech by leveraging high-performance computing resources. His project aims to contribute to more expressive and higher-quality cross-lingual speech and audio technologies.

PROJECT:"A Diffusion-Based Model for Inverse Electrocardiography (ECGI)"

Ramiro is a second-year Ph.D. student in Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Miami's Intelligent Complex Systems Laboratory (ICS Lab), advised by Dr. Adam Meyers. His research focuses on time-series analysis and generative modeling, with a special focus on diffusion models for imputation, forecasting and solving inverse problems.

Ramiro earned his B.S. in Applied Mathematics and Computing from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and previously worked on Indexa Capital as a Full-Stack Developer. Additionally, he has collaborated with clinicians and engineers on projects involving hypertensive phenotype analysis and circadian cardiovascular variability.

His broader interests include reinforcement learning, graph neural networks and network science. As an IDSC Fellow, he plans to develop a diffusion generative prior for reconstructing heart-surface electrical activity from Body Surface Potential Mapping (BSPM) and 12-lead ECG. The goal is to deliver accurate epicardial potential maps with calibrated uncertainty, improving robustness to noise and anatomical variability.

PROJECT: "Decoding the Intronic Signature of Cancer: Linking Intron Subtypes, Splicing Dysregulation and Tumor Biology"

Stephanie S. Kim is a second-year Ph.D. student in Human Genetics and Genomics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, under the guidance of Dr. Justin Taylor and Dr. Vanessa Aguiar-Pulido. Her research focuses on developing AI-driven models to decode the dark genome with an emphasis on intronic sub-classifications and splicing vulnerabilities that contribute to tumor development and progression. Stephanie earned her M.S. in Biostatistics from the University of Southern California and her B.S. in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and prior to joining the University of Miami, she worked on the identification of methylation biomarkers, Gastric cancer genomics, and modeling of homologous recombination deficiency at the Precision Medicine Center of Seoul National University Bundang Hospital. Kayla Schwartz is a fifth-year MD-PhD candidate in the University of Miami’s Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP). Her research focuses on the tumor microenvironment of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), with an emphasis on understanding how primary and metastatic PDAC differ at the molecular and cellular levels. She integrates molecular biology, single-cell genomics, and computational approaches to uncover mechanisms that drive metastatic progression. Kayla aims to leverage her dual training as a physician-scientist to advance data-driven strategies that improve outcomes for future oncology patients.

Isaiah Wang is an undergraduate student at the University of Miami majoring in Computer Science and Marine Science, with minors in Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, and Marine Policy. Through a broad range of interdisciplinary research experiences—spanning bioinformatic machine learning, remote sensing, and oceanographic carbon-flux analysis—he has developed a strong interest in applying computational and engineering tools to better understand and explore the ocean. After graduation, he plans to pursue graduate studies in ocean engineering, focusing on autonomous underwater vehicles, marine sensing, and intelligent exploration technologies.

Student Engagement Techniques: Designing Learning Experiences That Motivate and Activate Students

Student engagement is more than participation—it emerges from the interaction between motivation and active learning. This two-part workshop introduces a research-informed framework for understanding engagement and applying it intentionally in course design.

Part 2 centers on selecting and adapting specific student engagement techniques aligned with different learning goals—from recall and analysis to problem-solving and application—while also supporting community, appropriate challenge, and learner self-awareness.

Participants will gain concrete tools to design engagement strategically across individual class sessions and entire courses.

The course takes a holistic approach to mitigating active shooter incidents and covers
awareness, avoidance, and appropriate actions for response and reporting of
concerning behaviors prior to an incident ever taking place. In addition, expert
instructors discuss how to respond, what to look for, and how to prepare yourself to
survive an active shooter event if you are in the area or nearby when it occurs. Finally,
the course concludes with covering law enforcement’s and the University’s response to
various potentially dangerous situations including an active shooter or any mass-
casualty event. Topics include: the Emergency Notification Network (ENN) Alerts,
interacting with first responders, personal preparedness, and other initiatives of the
University designed to keep our Students, Staff, and Faculty as safe as possible.

Once you are registered, you will receive a reminder email and Zoom link for the
training session. A web camera and microphone capability are strongly preferred to
promote interactivity but not required.

Closed sessions are also available for specific groups, buildings, or departments (with a
minimum class size of 15), and may be scheduled at whatever date/time best
accommodates the participants. Please contact the Office of Emergency Management

Once a year, Canes come together to give back to our communities through a day of service. This year, we are volunteering with the Justin Bartlett Animal Rescue to share our Canes spirit and to connect more deeply with our community.

Since our last event in 2025, Justin Bartlett has purchased more than nine acres of land in Loxahatchee to support shelter animals that are not adopted quickly from the Justin Bartlett Animal Rescue location in Royal Palm Beach. The Meadows provides long term dogs and cats with ample space to exercise and live peacefully. For some, The Meadows is a a staycation while they await adoption. For others, it is the forever home they have been seeking.

Volunteer time slots are available in one and half hour time blocks from 10:00am -1:00pm. Our alumni, supporters, and friends will socialize with the rescue animals by walking, exercising, cleaning, and providing companionship. For those interested in helping with larger tasks, there are many opportunities on site to assist with more substantial projects including painting, flooring, and heavy cleaning.

We look forward to your participation and to helping this no kill shelter continue to serve Palm Beach County.
